Torino 2006

Is it just me, or has there been no coverage whatsoever about the Torino Winter Olympics in UAE newspapers? I knew the Olympics were happening sometime in February, but I did not know when exactly...so I asked my dad today and he said that the opening ceremony is tonight. I was surprised to hear that...I have not seen a single article lately about the preparations for the winter Olympics, and no mention of the opening ceremony.

I realise that the UAE is not a winter-sports-oriented country, but the Olympics are still an important event, whether it's the winter, or the summer edition. I, for one, always make it a point to watch some of the Olympic competitions, even though I wouldn't watch bobsleigh, moguls, or speed skating competitions during any other time in the year. But the Olympics are different. It's the same with the FIFA World Cup. I am not a huge football fan, but during the World Cup, I always get into football and enjoy watching the matches.

Interesting fact: Unlike past Olympic venues that went by their English names, this time the International Olympic Commitee chose the Italian version Torino after the city's leaders lobbied for the change. But TV stations are split between calling the city Turin, or Torino.

Anyway, the opening ceremony is tonight at 8PM Torino time, 11PM UAE time. I'll try to catch some of it if it is aired on any of our TV stations, but I doubt I'll be able to stay up late enough to watch the whole thing!

Update: None of the channels we have cover the Olympics. This sucks!

I am upset: it seems that none of the useless TV channels we have cover the Olympics...I think we need to have ART Sports or something, which we don't...so no Winter Olympics for me this year...Sucks...

If you get the german channels - they're showing it.

At least you can see the images and turn the sound down!

NZM, I don't get German channels either...But I do get Iranian, Italian, French, Spanish, Pakistani, Egyptian, Sudanese, Indian, Thai, Kurdish, Moroccan, Algerian, Iraqi, Polish and Turkish channels...

But on the up side, I just found Rai Sports (Italian channel) which covers the Olympics. Yay!

The worst is watching the Olympics on an American network. I think according to the USA they are the only ones really competing in the games!!! or are they scared to confuse the US population with all the country names ???? God forbid they show an event were they don't make it on the podium !!!!!!!!

I have been able to get some highlights from EuroSPORT news (Orbit Channel 37), in between tennis and football.

Is there a channel that is showing it more than jut the highlights afterwards?

I have been able to see some events on RAI 2 (or RAI Sports), which is channel number 11 on Orbit. I believe the events are actually live, but the commentary is in Italian...Oh well, it'll help me pick up a few words of Italian here and there...
