Emirates ID

Does ID stand for "Idiocy...Definitely" or "Incredibly Daft"? Because the whole process is a mess apparently.

If you have 5 minutes and would like to laugh your pants off, check out Fake Plastic Souk's hilarious post on the Emirates ID saga... Stand-up comedy material I tell ya!

I have yet to experience what many others have been experiencing around me, because my company is trying to get our IDs done all together, as a company. My fingers are crossed that this will, in fact, happen, because I cannot imagine dealing with the frustration of trying to get this done by the end of the year. Imagine the loss in productivity if each of us had to be absent from work for half a day (or a full day)to figure this out... Ridiculous!

My family in Abu Dhabi has experienced the same frustrations as everyone else, trying to fill out the application on the website, queuing in line for endless hours. There is no clear process and there are no clear answers.

I think it's safe to say that the December 31st deadline is simply not realistic. Someone, somewhere, better wake up and smell the coffee and do something about this....

PS: Just as I was finishing up this post, we got an e-mail saying that applying as a company is no longer possible as this service was cancelled. Oh GREAT!

In any case, you have to go personally because of the photograph and fingerprint requirement. Once you get through the problem of trying to get a form to complete and trying to get an appointment the actual process is a breeze. One desk for the form to be entered into their computer and another for the photo and fingerprinting. About 15 minutes total. Getting to that stage is the huge, seemingly insurmountable problem area.

And it's not a deadline anymore.

We've been 'reprieved'...

How can the authorities NOT extend the deadline for crying out loud. They make several years available for a minority group to register, but only a few months for hundreds of thousands of expats.
I used to be apathetic. Now I couldn't care less.

The main reason the registration process was phased is because when it started there were no registration centres throughout the UAE, and what better a group to start registering than the citizens themselves, or the "minority group" in your words?

As more centres budded up and the systems were improved, they opened the doors to the real inhabitants and rightful owners of the land (i.e. the expats).

No fine until jan 2011

Gulf News Reports:

Panicky expatriates from other categories contribute to the rush at EIDA registration centres, said Darwish Ahmad Al Zarouni, Director-General of the EIDA.

"Too many expatriates other than professionals visit registration centres and return as they are panicked by the rumours on fines and punitive measures like refusing official transactions," he said. He reiterated that no fines will be imposed on expatriates until January, 2011.

If one is knowledgeable enough, Emirates ID Database can be extracted from other Databases of other cards (ie, medical, labour, drivers license, immigration/visa).

Hence, its just a matter of collecting those databases, from Free Zones like (JAFZ, Hamriya, Sharjah, Sharjah Airport FZ, DAFZ etc, etc, even Immigration) and rebuilding them. Those records there are even more comprehensive, except ofcourse the fingerprints, which can still be collected from everybody by the time they renew their labour card or at our convenience.
