Stop/Start

No, I'm not referring to how frequently I update this blog....I'm referring to the way some (most) taxi drivers drive their cars in this city.

I'm guessing they all went to the same driving school, because they all tend to press on the gas pedal for a couple of seconds, then take their foot off it for a couple of seconds, then press on it again for a couple of seconds...and so on and so forth....

Which makes for a very, very unpleasant ride (this is particularly true after a long night filled with boozy antics).

Who has taught these people how to drive? How hard is it to just keep your foot on the pedal? Has anyone else experienced (or been bothered by) this type of driving?

Driving school? Taught to drive? They're self-taught, they have to be, they certainly haven't been taught to drive correctly - or safely.
Added to that is the problem of not knowing where they're going. I recently had an Egyptian taxi driver who said he'd arrived in Dubai (first time here) the evening before.

They drive exactly the same way in NYC. Coincidentally most taxi drivers here are also South Asian immigrants.

It's one of the things that my father taught me when I learned to drive with him - how to smoothly stay on the accelerator without stopping/starting.

uneducated fools...
the prob is that taxi drivers are not proud to be taxi drivers.. if u speak to some of them they will say they are trying to get some extra cash, or they work in import/export or they are filling in for a cousin... but they won't admit it..

be proud and do the job properly.

oh yeah, and go to a proper driving school

Taxis all over the world are the worst drivers in that town.. I don’t know is it because they do it all day and develop a short temper and they just don’t care or is it to annoy the person in the back.. or is it because they are just bored and they want to get with it.. taxis in the UAE are nothing in comparison to taxis in Jeddah..
I every day wish that I have some sort of something to get out of the car and bang their car with just to wake them up or to make them relise that they should not put other people into so much jeppordy.
